On October 12, 2017 the Nordic Swan Ecolabel announced the world’s first ecolabeled investment funds. Tundra was one among the first 12. The impetus behind this campaign was a growing awareness that investors, both laypeople and professionals, were keen to invest in ‘sustainable’ funds, especially those vetted by an independent ecolabel. A recognised and trusted name, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel is a cooperative agreement created by the Nordic Council of Ministers. At its inception, this ecolabel was intended to help educate consumers, encouraging them to use environmentally conscious products. 2017 was the first time the Nordic Swan Ecolabel was applied to financial instruments and investment funds. It is only awarded to funds that can prove an established record of and a systematic approach to sustainability in their investment process. Currently, 20 funds have achieved this certification.
The Nordic Swan Ecolabel believes that “investment funds have an important part to play in influencing companies so that they become more sustainable.” At Tundra, we subscribe to this philosophy too. We have established ourselves as frontrunners in using an ESG (environmental, social and governance) framework when evaluating our investment decisions. We have integrated ESG across our organisation and all of our companies are vetted using this approach. However, the Sustainable Frontier Fund, recently awarded a 5-star rating by Morningstar, applies the ESG framework especially stringently. As signatories of the UN Global Compact (UNGC) and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) we are committed to excluding any companies involved in the production and marketing of tobacco, alcohol, extraction/production of fossil fuels, GMO, weapons, pornography or commercial gambling from the fund. Companies responsible for breaching the UN Conventions that show no willingness to change or to adjust their corporate behavior are also excluded.
